Digital convergence of networks and media

last modified 03-09-2008 17:43
Digital convergence is the current process of integrating technologies and contents on platforms and devices that use digital languages.
Thanks to digital, many products – DVDs, stereos, CDs, cell phones, PCs… already have functions that are well beyond their original design.
In this context CSP is involved in activities ranging from technological industrial research to analysing usability, studying content formats for multi-channels, to Digital Right Management and Watermarking.
IPTV, Mobile TV, POD/VOD castings, are some of the key words used in the study of Human Interface Interaction and the usability of new channels accessing multimedia contents, from evolved cell phones to digital terrestrial television. These technologies are coupled with themes such as DVBx, New Format and Innovative Channels. These fields are where CSP work groups study new content formats for future personalized programme schedules by putting together management and development skills for multimedia contents with knowledge of advanced broadcasting technologies.
Digital Right Management and Watermarking are also prominent, studied both as technologies as well as applications and used as tools for publishing contents. Particular attention is given to the economic-social effects and new forms of copyright protection – Creative
Commons, Open Source and GPL licenses.

Some of CSP’s projects on these themes of research are:
  • Omegabox: development of an Open Source media centre
  • Wi-Pie Project: IPTV programme scheduling
  • Sat@once: the Internet via satellite
  • Osservatorio DTT Com: together with the Fondazione Università IULM for creating the first observatory on the DTT market in Italy
  • T-Services: services available on digital terrestrial platform
  • CDC Toscana: Tuscany’s digital terrestrial skills centre
  • E-Stream: promoting streaming in education (European project)
  • Extracampus: Piedmont University DTT network

Collaboration agreements in this field include:
