Big Data are not limited to Information Systems but extensively include service-generated data, information produced by Internet surfers or deriving from information-sensing mobile devices (even social networks data) and wireless sensor networks that monitor air pollution or weather conditions in different locations. CSP’s aim is to use ICTs to improve the quality of life, working conditions, the environment where we live. Examples of CSP’s project activities include: ICT applied to precision farming (Viniveri Project); cloud architectures collecting and working data gathered by sensors on the field (IoTNet Project); smart building, involving a considerable number of objects (curtains, air conditioners, radiators) throughout the building in order to ensure energy efficiency (DAEMON project).

Tag: environment, agricolture, smart building, greenIT.

Digital Networks – Networking and Wireless Communication

Internet access is a legal right: that is the main point of the recent decision of a German Federal Court which has acknowledged by law what is already a fact. This right is not safeguarded in extended areas in Italy, where landform and orography would make networking coverage unprofitable for private broadcasters. In Piedmont high mountain areas, hill communities, rural areas and cultural heritage sites have been connected with broadband networks thanks to CSP’s Living Labs, which involve local enterprises, schools and the public administration. HPWNet is the name of CSP’s pilot broadband backbone which enables large part of the Region to have access to Internet. HPWNet is made by objects interconnected through IoTNet, by the so-called “White Spaces” (radio and tv frequencies left free), as well as by experimental narrowband emergency networks using DMR – digital mobile radio – technologies and tactical networking.

Tag: marginal areas, internetworking, safety, infomobility.

Networked Media

Digital Convergence of traditional media with the Internet have led to new scenarios, where television-viewers are no longer passive targets of broadcasters’ contents but become interactive users accessing enhanced channels. CSP works in the field focusing on the sector’s topical issues: from 3D stereoscopic tv to augmented-reality applications, as well as multitouch and second screen technology.

Multitouch ad hoc educational apps for people with autism as well as apps using augmented reality to realize a 3D avatar able to translate going-live television-transmissions into sign language are examples of CSP’s activities related to disability. Stereoscopy in fact is the field of various research lines: transmission protocols – software side – in parallel with operating multimedia devices – hardware side – as an evolution of the OmegaIP project.

This last topic is complement to digital watermarking, which is the process to mark covertly multimedia contents in order to identify ownership of the copyright and its integrity to be assured, as well as to information security-related topics.

Digital Media are also the support base of collaborative networking logics combined with web 2.0 model. CSP in fact has focused on digital platforms dedicated to knowledge sharing and learning projects both in the corporate context and in school.

Tag: disability, health, digital TV, multitouch, web 2.0

Social Innovation

Projects for people with disabilities, for primary and secondary schools, for digital creativity and for people talent development. A project to put in place in a few minutes a first motor tracking, an initiative to raise awareness and popularize astronomy: these are some concrete examples of CSP contribution to the development of social innovation, of useful and practical technological application to improve the quality of life of people and territories. In addition to this, CSP works on approaches to technology transfer and innovation in the local PAs, businesses and communities, on models such as living labs, digital ecosystem, open innovation, often in comparison with international cases according to a comparative approach.

Tag: technology transfer, living lab, health, open innovation, digital business ecosystem, EU project

Big Data and Internet of Things In Information Technology, Big Data is a collection of huge data sets whose growth in size is due to the increasing use of the Internet and to the gathering of information by ubiquitous connected objects of different kind (the Internet of Things).
